What to Expect

The Traslación draws millions of barefoot devotees who converge to touch the centuries-old image of the Black Nazarene as its carriage (andas) inches through Old Manila. Expect dense, emotional crowds, towels passed up to be wiped on the image and returned, and a procession that can run 18–22 hours.

📍

The Route

The Traslación sets off at dawn from the Quirino Grandstand at Rizal Park (Luneta) and winds through Padre Burgos Avenue, across Quezon Bridge, and into the streets of Quiapo, ending at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church). A nine-day novena and the Pahalik (kissing of the image) precede January 9.

⚠️

Crowd Safety

This is among the densest crowds on earth — crush injuries, fainting, and heat exhaustion are common. Travel light, hydrate, wear sturdy footwear (or expect to go barefoot), keep to the edges away from the andas, agree on a meeting point since mobile signal is often jammed, and follow PNP and Red Cross marshals. The barefoot tradition is an act of penance and humility.

📜

History & Significance

The dark wooden image of Jesus bearing the cross was brought from Mexico to Manila in 1606; tradition holds it survived a galleon fire, giving it its colour and reputation for miracles. The yearly Traslación re-enacts the 1787 transfer of the image to Quiapo Church and is the single largest religious gathering in the Philippines.
