What to Expect
Songkran is the Thai New Year and the world's largest water fight. Expect city-wide water battles, street parties, and traditional ceremonies. Locals pour water over Buddha statues and elders' hands as a sign of respect.
Best Locations
Bangkok's Khao San Road and Silom Road host the biggest street parties. Chiang Mai's moat area is famous for its intense water fights. Phuket's Patong Beach and Pattaya's Beach Road are also popular hotspots.
Travel Tips
Use waterproof bags for your phone and valuables — you will get soaked. Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead as prices surge. Most businesses close April 13-15, so plan banking and errands before the holiday.
Good to Know
Alcohol sales are restricted on the main Songkran day. Road accidents spike during the holiday — avoid long-distance road travel if possible. Dress modestly at temple ceremonies despite the water-fight atmosphere elsewhere.
